HANDS OFF OUR ASSETS
The State Government is trying to force Melbourne’s family-owned bus operators to sell some, or all, of their new and/or old assets to the Government when they sign new contracts.
Victoria’s second, third and fourth generation family business bus owners don’t want to shut up shop and sail off into the sunset. They contemplate continuance. Their businesses are not available for compulsory acquisition. The bus owners just want to keep using their own assets to continue providing the excellent community service they’ve been contracted to do for the last 60 to 100 years.
It is not in the interest of passengers or the public generally that they be forced to sell their assets to the Government or their nominee.
When Labor was in Opposition, they promised that they would maintain the status quo if they were elected in 2014. Now they are breaking that promise. In effect, they want to nationalise Victoria’s bus network.
If the Government succeeds it would have dire consequences for passengers: complaints will skyrocket; safety standards would diminish; and on time running performance would plummet.
The State Government should not be spending taxpayers’ money nationalising Victoria’s bus networks. They should be spending taxpayers’ money on bus and public transport service improvements, particularly in the outer suburbs of Melbourne.
Tell the Andrews Labor Government to stop being the unquestioning advocate for the bureaucracy’s public ownership agenda and misleading the public in the process. Tell them to cease their efforts to force family-owned, community minded bus operators sell all or some of their assets to the Government or their nominee and to dump a bureaucratic model which would see only a handful foreign-owned companies dominating Melbourne’s bus services.
